Summary
When Lady Bird Johnson became First Lady, she immediately began to record her daily activities and her impressions. These were dictated into a recorder and certainly intended from the beginning for publication, which first occurred in 1970. Since these were public diaries, one won't find any revelations about her marriage to Lyndon Johnson, nor catty comments on members of the cabinet. It is, rather, an often interesting look at the life of a public person. Beginning with the difficult days after the Kennedy assassination, she took time almost every day to ruminate on what had happened. In many ways, reprinting this now shows how the role of the First Lady has expanded since then. The most political thing Lady Bird was involved in was her program to beautify America through public gardens, a legacy that remains. There are interesting tidbits, such as an account of an afternoon with Alice Roosevelt Longworth or a confrontation with Eartha Kitt over social issues, which Lady Bird managed to sidestep. There are many photos of the family as well as state pictures. The index only lists names, not events, so there is no way of looking up her reactions to issues such as the Vietnam War. Nevertheless, this will be of interest to historians of the presidency, the sixties and the role of women in government. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
